Dr. Shiekh E. Laykay ALAO
ZONAL COORDINATOR, NORTH-WEST (+234) 8133104852 firstname.lastname@example.org
Emmanuel Laykay Alao was born 61 years ago in Kaduna, Nigeria to late Chief Moses Omotayo Alao of blessed memory and Mrs Florence Olajumoke. The young chap attended the prestigious St. George’s Primary school, Zaria before proceeding to the famous St. Pauls College Wusasa (now Kufena College, Zaria). Without missing a bit, he left secondary school and was admitted into the School of Basics Studies for his pre-degree certificate all based on merit. In 1977, he gained admission into the highbrow Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria to read Botany single honours where he graduated in 1980 under the tutelage of Professors B. J. Harris; Mead; Choudhry and Adegboye. Motivated by these academic luminaries, this youth shared the vision and was encouraged to pursue a dedicated researchers’ life. Prof. Mary Ajakaiye (RIP) gave leverage on his quest to pay back his Alma Mata some five years engaging young minds like his. In the cause of marking the external examinations, he came in contact with Prof. Emmanuel Salako who encouraged him to come into Crop Protection as a profession and today, to the glory of God, I regret not that decision. Professor I. D. Erinle of blessed memories adopted and groomed him for bacteriology but destiny had fungi and fungi-like organisms for him.
He joined the services of the Institute for Agricultural Research as an Research Pathologist and today has risen to the post of Principal Research Fellow (equivalent of Associate Professor). He has attended many courses to his credit at personal records and sponsored by various organizations. These have earned him accolades from colleagues. Widely travelled with experience on crop disease collections as a nature lover and conservationist, he prefers population dynamics manipulation to the total kill methods advocated by pesticides enthusiasts.
He is also belongs to other several local and international bodies amongst which are the American Society for Plant Protection; The American Academics Society, International Society Plant Protection, African Association of Plant Protection; Agricultural Society of Nigeria, Botanical Society of Nigeria and Horticultural Society of Nigeria among others. A prolific producer of articles, he has to his credit 34 peer reviewed journal publications, 45 conference papers, extension articles and crop production/protection guidelines, and occasional serials. Has supervised numerous M.Sc. and PhD students and never tired helping indigent candidates. He is a recognized community leader, an ordained Pastor with the Living Faith Church Worldwide, who is happily married to Dr. Modupe Alao with children and dependents.
