Raphael Nnajiofor Okigbo attended St Odilia’s Primary School, Ojoto, Christ the King College (CKC) Onitsha (1973-1978), University of Benin (1980-1984). He has B. Sc. Botany (1984), M. Sc. Botany (1988), M. Sc. Microbiology (1992) and Ph.D. Microbiology (1995) all from the University of Benin, Edo State, Nigeria and a Post Graduate Diploma in Education from Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto (2010). He started his teaching career as Assistant Lecturer at Agbor College of Education (1988 -1992), Delta State University, Abraka (1992 -1999), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State (1999-2005), University of Uyo (2014 – 2015 Sabbatical), Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka (2005 to date).
Raphael N. Okigbo became a Professor of Botany of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Nigeria in 2008 and twice the Head of the Department of Botany, the first Sub Dean of Faculty of Biosciences. He is a member of many international and local organizations such as American Society for Microbiology, International Society for Pest information, Germany, American Phytopathological Society, Botanical Society of Nigeria etc. His research team won the first position African Award for Emerald Research Grants, UK for 2006. He also won Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETF) grants 2012, 2013. He has travel grant to China, 2005; Thailand, 2012, Philippine 2017, Indonesia 2018 and China 2019. He has attended ten International Conferences and the last two being the Seventh International Symposium on Integration of Science and Tech (ICIST 2019) Sonyang, China and Rotary International convention in Hamburg, Germany in June, 2019. He has supervised 4 Ph.D and 14 Masters’ dissertations successfully and served as External Examiner to many Universities locally and internationally. He is a member of Editorial Board of many International and local journals. He has served as a key note speaker in many International and Local Conferences. He delivered the 33rd Inaugural Lecture of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, on 27th October 2016.
His awards include (i) Fellow of Mycological Society of Nigeria (FMYCOSON) Dec. 2017 (ii) Association of Agricultural Technology in South East Asia (AATSEA) award for Excellence in Agricultural leadership for Community Development, 2015 (iii) Special Commendation award for research of value to the developing world by Emerald Group Publishing, UK and USA, June 2009 (iv) Emerald Literari network 2009 awards for excellence (v) Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), MOUA branch, award May 2009 (vi) King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology, Ladkrabang, Bangkok, Thailand, award etc. Raphael N. Okigbo has many international publications in referred journals. His research interest is on Environmental studies and Biological controls of rots in yam and Biotechnology of Phytomedicines. He is the Charter President of the Rotary Club of Awka Metropolis, a Major Donor and Past Assistant Governor. He is married to Prof Ebele Okigbo and marriage is blessed with two boys.
