Jonathan Jeremiah ATUNGWU is a Professor of Plant Nematology in the Department of Crop Protection, Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Nigeria. Joe, as he is often called by his peers, is a dynamic, enthusiastic and optimistic personality. He is driven by passion for excellence and thrives well on efficient and effective utilization of resources guided by innovative ideas and implementations of new skills to deliver on the mandates of the organizations he serve. He is one of the scientists and experts in Nigeria who pioneered organic agriculture movement and development in the country in 2005. His research work focuses on host plant resistance and organic pest management in tropical agro-ecosystem. Joe has tremendous leadership experiences, including being a Dean, Director, Deputy Dean, Head of Department, Coordinator, Chairman of Committees/Panels, Principal Investigator, Internal and External Assessor for Professorial Cadre as well as Graduate Examinations at different times.
He holds the Doctor of Philosophy degree of FUNAAB and a Short Course Certificate (Equivalence of Masters’ Degree in Sustainable Agriculture) from Coventry University, UK. He is a Board Member of several organizations, including the Nigerian Society for Plant Protection (NSPP).
He joined NSPP on the 24th day of September 2000 when his mentor, teacher and trainer, Professor Steve Afolami and President of the Society took him to Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, Ibadan, Oyo State, for the 28th Annual Conference. Since 2002, Joe has not missed any NSPP annual conference till date. He was elected the Secretary of NSPP on September 07, 2011 during the 36th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State. He was re-elected Secretary on March 12, 2013 at the 38th AGM at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State. Joe was elected as the Vice President on March 19, 2015 and re-elected on March 22, 2017 during the 40th and 42nd AGMs co-hosted/hosted by the University of Abuja and Raw Material Research and Development Council, Abuja and the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, Benue State, respectively. He is the current President of NSPP, a position he was elected into on April 9, 2019.
On the International scene, Joe is a member of the Steering Committee of the West African Network on Organic Agriculture Research and Training. He was the Course Coordinator of the International Summer School on Organic Agriculture. He is also a member of the Biotic Constraints and Food Production Committee of the International Society for Plant Pathology. He has travelled to many countries including UK, China, South Africa, Kenya, Sierra-Leone etc in a bid to enhancing his capacity for research, teaching and training in agriculture.
He has several prizes, honours, scholarships and numerous commendations/awards, outstanding among which are the FUNAAB Vice-Chancellor’s Productivity Award, International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA) Fellowship for Ph. D, Staff/Student Mobility Fellowship at Universite D’Abomey-Calavi, Cotonou, Benin Republic, Federal Government Scholarship, FUNAAB Scholarship for Postgraduate Studies, and Dean’s Honour Roll.
Joe who is happily married to his heartthrob, Faith and are blessed with lovely children, is a disciplinarian who usually ensures highest ethical standards, rule of law, respect and integrity as a leadership by example.
